Dry air is harmful

The mucous membranes of the respiratory tract can dry out when the humidity level falls below 30 percent. Proper humidification helps keep the throat and nasal passage clear, and prevents respiratory ailments, which can harm the human voice. No wonder that humidifiers are so common in the homes and dressing rooms of professional singers.

The self-cleansing function of the windpipe is affected by dry air. This can increase susceptibility to infection and illnesses of the respiratory system. Should you fall victim to the flu and fever, a balanced humidity level will help with your recovery.

More than 60% of the human body is composed of water. When the air around you is dry, your body will draw moisture from any available source including human cells and even your skin. Raw lips, itchy skin and irritated eyes – these complaints can all be attributed to a lack of moisture. 

Breathing dry air makes the intake of oxygen and its subsequent transfer to the blood system more difficult. Fatigue, headaches and diminished concentration levels are symptoms of a reduced oxygen supply.

Low moisture levels in the air can cause the electrostatic charging of hair, clothing, carpets, furniture and appliances. This can be very annoying, and for electronic equipment it can be dangerous. Proper air humidity prevents the build-up of static electricity.

Low moisture content in room air will cause musical instruments to go out of tune.

Dry room air dulls the surface of furniture and other wooden objects. Eventually, cracks will appear in the wood surface ais it dires.

Humidity binds dust. Dry room air causes dust to rise - a condition made worse by the thermal currents created by the furnace.
